The quality of information available over the Internet varies considerably. Some factors to consider when evaluating a site include:

When was the web site last updated?
Does the site's author provide contact information?
Is there a privacy policy clearly stated?
Does the domain name indicate a government site (.gov), a commercial site (.com), an educational site (.edu), a non-profit (.org), the military (.mil), a network organization (.net), etc?

MNsure - "MNsure is a new central marketplace where Minnesota individuals, families and small employers can get quality, affordable health insurance and access tax credits or assistance to help pay for coverage. MNsure will offer an easy-to-use website where you can search and compare plans, a hotline you can call to talk with someone about your options, and places where you can sign up in your community." HealthCare.gov - This page has information provided by the federal government. It is designed to help individuals and small businesses make decisions that are right for them, whether they are in need of coverage or already have it.

Artcyclopedia: The Guide to Fine Art on the Internet - Provides information and references to artist and museum information on the web. Users can browse by subject or search by artist's name, title of the artwork, or by name or location of museums.

The Greatest Films - The site contains hundreds of "interpretive and detailed plot synopses, review commentary" and movie quotations, in addition to the movie rankings.

The Internet Movie Database - Users can access detailed information on movies, actresses/actors, television, video/DVD release dates, previews, photo galleries, and much more.

Minnesota Author Biographies Project - "The Minnesota Author Biographies Project is the product of collaboration between the Minnesota Historical Society, Metronet, and the Minnesota Center for the Book. The pilot database provides biographical sketches of 36 past and present Minnesota authors."

MuseumStuff - Gateway to the World's Museums - Overview and general purpose information for museums, virtual exhibits, and learning resources for art.

Center for Auto Safety - Founded by Ralph Nader and Consumers Union, individuals can search for automotive defects, view and file complaints, link to State "Lemon Laws", and view various automotive reports.

Edmunds - Good source for new and used car prices, reviews, locating dealers/sellers, auto rankings and more.

IIHA/HLDI: Crash Testing and Highway Safety - Primarily contains information concerning automobile collision ratings and driving safety.

Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency, Inc. - Serving Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis counties by providing opportunities for those with limited resources.

CollegeSource Online - College related resources including assessment test and preparation, career, financial aid, and planning guides. A service of the Career Guidance Foundation.

Federal Student Aid - Federal Student Aid information provided by the U.S. Department of Education on grants, loans, and work study. The web site also contains information on choosing the right school, applying for admissions, and finding and repaying your education.

FastWeb: Free Scholarship and College Searches - "FastWeb lets students create a personalized profile that can be matched against our expansive databases of colleges and scholarships." In addition, "[f]or students searching for a college, FastWeb can match their background with two- and four-year colleges across the country."

ISEEK - "[T]he Internet System for Education and Employment Knowledge, is a web-based gateway to Minnesota career, employment, education, and business development information and services. The Internet system helps you make smart choices about careers, employment, education, and business growth."

Minnesota Department of Education: Academic Standards - State of Minnesota academic standards in Art, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, World Languages, and Career and Technical Education.

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MNSCU) - The MNSCU web site contains information and resources on the 32 state supported technical colleges, community colleges, and state universities, in addition to MNSCU publications, legislative information, and much more.

Positively Minnesota - The Workforce Center web site has been newly merged with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. The Workforce Center System has locations throughout the state and "provide the tools, resources, and service you need for your employment, training, and related workforce development needs."

Minnesota Works - As a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Department of Economic Security (MDES) and Internet System for Education and Employment Knowledge (ISEEK), the Job Bank service allows job seekers to post resumes, search for job openings, and contact employers online.

The Riley Guide - "Employment opportunities and job resources on the Internet!" Information on employment searching, researching employers, resumes and cover letters, networking and interviewing skills, salary guides, and more.

St. Louis County - This is a place to find employment opportunites with St. Louis County.

Food Network - Search and browse recipes, watch cooking demos, read guides and "how-tos's", or get information about past and upcoming programs on Food Network.

Food Reference - Food Reference contains articles, trivia and facts, tips, quotes, poems and humor, crossword puzzles, links, cookbook reviews, and more dedicated to food and drink.

Ellis Island - Search immigration records through the Ellis Island Database. Registration required to access.

Family Search - Supported by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the site provides information on starting family histories, beginning research, locating sources, research tips, other genealogy related web sites, and more.

Minnesota Discovery Center - "The Research Center focuses on the regional, local and personal history of Minnesota's iron ranges and the people who settled here. An integral part of the Ironworld Discovery Center, the Research Center is a repository and resource for historical documentation and interpretative information. Primary interest areas are geology, mining, settlement, industrial development, immigration, ethnicity, logging, natural resources, social, political and economic history and genealogy."

Minnesota Historical Society Death Certificate Search - "The Minnesota Historical Society hosts this online index of death records to improve access to this popular and useful resource for genealogical and family history research. Currently, this database indexes the death cards from 1906 to 1907 and the death certificates from 1908 to 1996."

National Archives and Records Administration : Genealogy - NARA Genealogy provides information for beginning genealogical research and resources, locating records through NARA, research topics, overviews of the microfilm catalog, record order forms, and publications.

Vital Records - Provides contact information and details for vital records for each state. Covers record type, costs, available dates, links to online forms [if available], and hyperlinks to other web sites, databases, and online resources.

City of Virginia Department of Public Utilities - Serving the community since 1912, the Department of Public Utilities web site includes information on the utility distribution system, Commission Meeting Minutes, Annual Reports, and customer service.

St. Louis County, MN - The web site provides information on the various functions of the county from instructions on ordering vital records to public lands for sale.

Virginia Economic Development Authority - A great resource for overview information about the services, recreation, finance, housing, statistics, history, and education in the City of Virginia.

State

Iron Range Resources - As a state agency dedicated to improving the economic stability and growth of the Taconite Assistance Area (TAA), the IRR web site focuses agency, business, regional, natural, and tourism resources.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - The Minnesota DNR web site highlights education and safety training; outdoor activities and places; Minnesota's natural resources; regulations, licenses and permits; as well as materials and information from each of the DNR divisions.

Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development - " The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is the state’s principal economic development agency, with programs promoting business recruitment, expansion and retention, workforce development, international trade, community development and tourism." Areas within the DEED web site include: business services, community development, facts and figures, job seekers, news and events, tourism, and agency publications.

North Star - As the official web site of State of Minnesota, North Star serves as "the electronic entry point to Minnesota State government information and services." Resources on most state agencies or programs can be found through North Star.

FirstGov - FirstGov is the official web portal for the United States government. Users can browse or search through Federal Departments and Agencies; Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches of the U.S. Government; State, Local, and Tribal agencies and organizations; and statistics, forms, and laws and regulations.

International

CIA World Factbook - The World Factbook contains in-depth coverage of Nations. Sections of coverage include: geographic, demographic and people, government, economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues. The print version is available in the reference collection.

United Nations - The U.N. web site offers visitors information on the history and organization of the U.N., member states, conferences and events, peace and security operations, economic and social development, human right work, humanitarian affairs, and international law.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - The CDC web site covers numerous health and safety topics. Users can search for specific information or browse the various publications and reports through the index.

Discovery Health - A service of the Discovery Health Channel, the Discovery Health web site provides information and resources on topics such as allergies and asthma, depression, heart health, pregnancy, stress, and more.

Healthfinder - A project of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, healthfinder is "a key resource for finding the best government and nonprofit health and human services information on the Internet." Users can find information on illnesses and conditions, doctors and dentists, clinics and hospitals, Medicare and Medicaid, and much more.

Mayo Clinic - The web site provides current and reliable information on diseases and conditions, healthy living, drugs and supplements, and health tools. Users can search or browse by topic.

MedlinePlus - A service of the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, "MedlinePlus has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 650 diseases and conditions. There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials."

Mesothelioma Causes - With more than 3,000 pages of content, this site features information on asbestos, mesothelioma, and other cancers that are caused by asbestos exposure (lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, etc.). The site has a full staff of writers dedicated to research and writing about asbestos exposure and the diseases that result from exposure to the toxic mineral. In addition, the medical adviser and editor, Dr. Mauricio Salazar,M.D. has personally reviewed, edited, and approved all medical information on the site.

The Avalon Project - A project of the Yale Law School, the site contains reproductions of news and statements from U.S. and international leaders on the events of September 11 in chronological fashion.

September 11 Digital Archive - "The September 11 Digital Archive uses electronic media to collect, preserve, and present the history of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania and the public responses to them. Funded by a major grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and organized by the American Social History Project at the City University of New York Graduate Center and the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, the Digital Archive will contribute to the on-going effort by historians and archivists to record and preserve the record of 9/11."
