How to Help Your Library

In the past several years the Library has sustained budget cuts. Your contribution ensures our library will continue to offer a full complement of books, movies, music CDs, and other materials.

There are several different ways you may donate to VPL:

Donate to the Friends of the Library

Funds for Us to Buy Items

Items Which You Have

Older Copies of the Rohian

Polk City Directories

Used Cell Phones and Printer Cartridges

FAQs

However you choose to donate, your contribution will help ensure that a varied collection is maintained for the educational and recreational use of the entire community.

The Friends of the Virginia Public Library is a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping our library strong. The Friends is an active group of community members that recruit volunteers, promote library programs, and assist the library with outreach and fundraising. They are grateful for the support of the community and the willing, talented support of their many volunteers.

Adopt-a-Book (Donating Funds) [Top]

Some people prefer to donate money for the purchase of new items. This can be done through our Adopt-a-Book program. Once you have decided to participate in our Adopt-a-Book program, you have some options.

The first options are related to item selection. Is there a specific item you would like to see in the library? Is there a subject area you would like to see more of? Would you rather let us choose an item for you? These are all options available to you in this program.

Other options are related to acknowledgement of your donation. The Adopt-a-Book program provides an opportunity to honor individuals, family members, or friends with a commemorative bookplate. You could also have a bookplate stating that you are the one who made purchase of the book possible. Alternatively, you can remain anonymous. Please tell us if you do not wish to have your name on a published list of donors.

Donating Books [Top]

Occasionally, the Library is able to take donations of good, current used books. Sometimes these books can be added to the collection and often they can be sold in the annual Friends of the Library book sale. If you have some newer books which are in good condition and that you believe the library can use, come on in and ask one of us if they are something we can accept. We are not able to issue charitable tax receipts for these items.

See the Donations Guidelines for more information on donating items to the library.

Cell Phones and Printer Cartridges[top]

For those of you with old cell phones and used printer cartridges, please know that we are accepting them for donation. They will be recycled to earn points for supplies for the library.

VPL still looking to fill gaps in Rohian collection [top]

Do you have an old Virginia High School yearbook that you are willing to part with? The Library is looking for Rohians that have been lost or stolen from our collection. We would like to fill in and have a complete set. We have many requests to look at Rohians from previous residents, who are vacationing here, and by class reunion planners and we cannot provide them with yearbooks for all years.

It is unfortunate, but we have had to remove the Rohians from the shelves and they are now available only by request at the Main Desk for examining within the Library. Following is a list of the years that are missing.

1944 1945 1946

1953 1960

1964 1965 1966 1967 1968

1977 1979 1980 1982 1991
1998

If you would be willing to donate a copy for any of these years, please call the Library (748-7525) or drop it off at the Main Desk. They do not have to be in pristine condition. Thank you in advance for considering making a donation.

*Thank you to Joanne Jarvi and Linda Squires for donating the 1973 Rohian to the library.

*Thank you to Howard Mosley for donating the 1969, 1970, and 1971 Rohians to the library.

Missing Polk City Directories [top]

In addition to having missing Rohians, the library is missing some of its city directories. Like the Rohians, the Polk directories are much in demand and we would like to be able to provide our patrons with a complete set.

Frequently Asked Questions [top]

Why does the library need money to buy books?

Public demand for library material has increased tremendously over the last few years.  People are borrowing more and more and they are demanding a greater variety of materials.  The Library has had less funding for new materials recently due to funding cuts made by the State Legislature.

Can I donate a book, or other item I have previously purchased, to the Adopt-a-Book program?

No.  The Adopt-a-Book program is set up to handle monetary donations.  It also allows the Library to maintain some control over the material selection.

What is the minimum donation for Adopt-a-Book or Media Item?

While the library accepts donations of any amount, the cost of administering the donation and the price of books necessitates at least a $15 donation to participate in Adopt-a-Book; the same applies to music CDs.  The minimum donation to purchase a movie in your name is $20.

Can I donate books to the library?

Yes, we will accept used books in good condition for our annual book sale; however, we are not able to issue charitable tax receipts for these books.  Also, we cannot accept old encyclopedia sets, textbooks, condensed books, or magazines.  Please ask at one of the service desks, or see the Donations Guidelines, for what types of book donations we accept.
